The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games events were spread across 18 world-class facilities located on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. In groundwork for the events, the Queensland Government delivered three new venues and made major upgrades to other facilities that provide important sport and community amenities for Queensland.
The $320 million sporting infrastructure program was funded by both the Queensland and Australian Governments.
ANNA MEARES VELODROME
The new Anna Meares Velodrome is the state’s first permanent enclosed cycling venue, and is based at Brisbane’s Sleeman Sports Complex.
BELMONT SHOOTING COMPLEX
Upgrades to the present facilities included many areas of change, and the venue was chosen to lessen environmental impacts.
BROADBEACH BOWLS CLUB
To make the venue ready for the Games the club was upgraded, with surrounding areas redeveloped. The upgrade also benefits the community, with people of all ages using the facility.
CAIRNS CONVENTION CENTRE
The venue features a seating capacity of approximately 5,000 and following the Games, it will endure a $176 million renovation and expansion.
The $6 million upgrade provided permanent lighting which includes 468 new energy-saving light fittings on the tower head frames and under the roof of the stadium. Additional seating was added to increase the capacity from 25,000 to 35,000.
COOMERA INDOOR SPORTS CENTRE
The Coomera Indoor Sports Centre provides an important piece of community infrastructure for one of SEQ’s fastest growing regions.
GOLD COAST AQUATIC CENTRE
Featuring six pools, a 600m2 gymnasium, a dry land dive training facility, the centre can cater for international competitions.
GOLD COAST HOCKEY CENTRE
The Gold Coast Hockey Centre upgrade project provides the region with a world-class facility.
GOLD COAST SPORTS AND LEISURE CENTRE
The new Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre is seen as a vital long-term legacy for the community and will enhance the economy by attracting elite high-performance training camps and major events to SEQ.
